Volunteers from Norwood, JVN and Hendon Mosque defy elements to help refugees in the name of Sadaqa Day

21 March 2018

Volunteers from Norwood, the Jewish Volunteering Network (JVN) and Hendon Mosque braved the inclement weather to turn up at Norwood’s Kennedy Leigh Family Centre on Sunday (18 March) to pack an enormous amount of donated toiletries and clothing for refugees across the globe.

More than 30 volunteers from across the Jewish and Muslim communities worked together to pack over 100 parcels to distribute to refugees in need of toiletries and warm hats. They came together under the banner of Sadaqa Day, a Muslim-led day of social action.

One Norwood volunteer said the day was “absolutely amazing”.

“How inspiring it is to meet new friends from the wider community and do something really worthwhile. When is the next one?” they continued.

Elsewhere, children from the Radlett Reform Cheder turned up at the Norwood warehouse to sort donations for Norwood’s charity shops, also on Sunday 18 March.

The 12 children, aged up to 12-years-old, learned about how the shops work, what happens to donations and where the clothes and stock come from. Then they spilt up into small groups and helped to sort and bag the clothes. They even modelled some of the hats for us!
