Job Description

To respond to residents' social needs giving reassurance and support as necessary.

To assist residents with personal care needs in retiring and rising as required.

To assist with household tasks such as washing, ironing, etc as directed by the Home Manager.

To be aware of the residents' health and medical needs and report to a senior member of staff should there be any change in a resident's condition.

To establish good relationships with residents' relatives, friends, volunteers and advocates.

To work closely and in an appropriately professional manner with other professionals, both within and outside the organisation, eg doctors, Day Services, social workers, etc.

To keep written reports as required by the Home Manager.

To carry out administration of drugs (after appropriate training)

To attend staff meetings and supervision sessions once a month (during the day) and implement care plans for residents, as agreed.

To maintain standard of dress that is appropriate to role and in accordance with the organisation's dress policy.

To maintain confidentiality at all times and to ensure respect for, proper observance of and adherence to Norwood's confidentiality policy for all staff.

To attend regular supervision sessions with line manager, regular team meetings and undertake relevant training as and when required.

To take all reasonable care of the health and safety of her/himself and of other persons who may be affected by her/his acts or omissions. As regards to any duty or requirement imposed upon the organisation by or under any of the relevant statutory provisions, to co-operate with the organisation as far as it necessary to enable that duty or requirement to be performed or complied with.

To report to the Health and Safety Manager either serious risks or your concerns over safety issues.

To work collaboratively with volunteers to ensure that their contribution enhances quality of service provision and support across the organisation.

To work at any other Norwood location, as and when required.

To undertake any other duties which are consistent with the post.

Who Norwood Supports



Understanding of and ability to cope with needs of residents i.e. challenging behaviour, physical and emotional needs.

Ability to meet basic care needs of residents Basic awareness of health needs e.g. ability to notice and act on changes in residents' health.

Ability to facilitate residents' independence skills and promote their emotional well being.




Working towards or having achieved NVQ in Care Level ll or QCF Level 2 dip.


Knowledge & Skills


Ability to work according to principles of "normalisation".

Good reading, writing and numeric skills.

Good interpersonal skills e.g. warmth, caring, sensitivity, patience.


Clean driving licence and willingness to drive Norwood's vehicles.




To remain awake and alert whilst on duty in order to attend to residents needs throughout the night .

Ability to be responsible for residents and home during the night, providing care to residents as needed and contacting emergency Norwood or other emergency services if needed. .

Good domestics skills e.g. cleaning, basic food preparation, ironing and repairing residents' clothing. .

Ability to be a constructive and flexible member of the team to work to the guidance of the Home Manager (and other Managers) and work co-operatively with other colleagues. .

Ability to be self motivated and use personal initiative within a structured framework.

Ability to work under pressure.

Ability to show empathy and understanding towards residents.

Understanding/awareness of or willingness to learn about the Jewish culture.

Ability to work flexibly.

Must be physically fit.

Understanding/awareness of Equal Opportunities.


Ability to support and participate in recreational activities inside and outside the home.
