Job Description

To ensure that food purchased, stored, prepared and served is safe for consumption. Knowledge and proven experience of achieving 5 star rating from the Food Standard Agency and maintaining this level.

To manage the food budget appropriately with concise planning and informing immediately the RHM of any discrepancies.

To ensure that the people we support involvement in the process of menu planning is at the forefront of their working practice and be able to demonstrate and evidence this.

To manage the kitchen rota ensuring staffing is in line with the needs of the service and within the budget allocated.

To maintain all aspects of the kitchen, including stock, cleaning and disposal of waste to the regulations set by the Food Standards Agency. Able and willing to work on Bank holidays to meet services needs.

To prepare, plate and serve well balanced nutritious meals, taking into account the menu of the day, special dietary needs, vegetarian options and care plans.

To attend any training required by Norwood or the RHM for dietary needs and pass on knowledge and understand to Assistant Cook.

To write and regularly review the kitchen risk assessment in line with Norwood's Health and Safety Policy and Procedure, and as directed by the Ro be responsible for cleaning dining and kitchen areas after meals are served, including sweeping, washing up crockery, cutlery, utensils, pots and pans.

To complete periodic cleaning of the kitchen as defined in the cleaning schedule.

To record, report and action all Health and Safety and Food Standards Agency required checks, including food temperatures, fridge and freezer temperatures, opening and closing checks.

To be aware of and comply with the safe working practices under the Health & Safety at Work Act and Food Hygiene Regulations.


To maintain standard of dress that is appropriate to role and in accordance with the organisation's dress policy.

To maintain confidentiality at all times and to ensure respect for, proper observance of and adherence to Norwood's confidentiality policy for all staff.

To attend regular supervision sessions with line manager, regular team meetings and undertake relevant training as and when required.

To take all reasonable care of the health and safety of her/himself and of other persons who may be affected by her/his acts or omissions. As regards to any duty or requirement imposed upon the organisation by or under any of the relevant statutory provisions, to co-operate with the organisation as far as it necessary to enable that duty or requirement to be performed or complied with.

To report to the Health and Safety Manager either serious risks or your concerns over safety issues.

To work collaboratively with volunteers to ensure that their contribution enhances quality of service provision and support across the organisation.

To work at any other Norwood location, as and when required.

To undertake any other duties which are consistent with the post.

Who Norwood Supports



Experience of working in a catering environment.


Knowledge and experience of delivering specialist diets and soft eating plans.

Experience of achieving Five stars from the Food standards Agency and maintaining the rating.

Excellent time management skills.




Level 2 diploma in food safety/Hygiene or equivalent.

Good standard of English and maths.


Knowledge & Skills


Knowledge of Health & Safety requirements.

Be responsible for the cleaning and maintaining of the kitchen and facilities to include all aspects of Health and Safety.

Knowledge and understanding of food hygiene regulations.

Ability to work as part of a team.

Excellent communication skills.

Ability and willingness to take instructions.

Willingness to learn about Kosher cookery.

Ability to demonstrate flexibility of approach to meet the needs of People We Support.

Capable of completing supervisions with the assistant cooks as per company policy.

Ensure all team members are working in line with current legislation at all times.

Ability to disseminate any appropriate information to all kitchen staff team and care staff team.


Knowledge of Kosher cooker.




High degree of personal integrity with a commitment to confidentiality.

Approachable and aware of self on others.

Good general health.

Knowledge or willingness to learn about Jewish Culture.

Able to demonstrate a desire to improve menus and People We Support involvement in planning menus at Pamela Barnett.

Able and willing to work flexible hours, including Bank Holidays, to meet service needs.


Commitment to Continuous Personal Development (CPD).

Driver and willing to use own car.
