Job Description


1. To manage the behaviour support function, currently operating to a Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) model, including providing clinical supervision and managing a caseload of complex cases

2. To manage the communication and engagement function, which provides practice leadership, expertise on fostering better communication with people with learning disabilities and embedding active support in care provision

3. Undertake assessments, including pre-admission, to provide a thorough understanding of cognitive and functional ability and behaviours that challenge

4. To support colleagues using a PBS approach whilst identifying opportunities to introduce Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) where this would have clinical merit

5. To deliver training and develop resources for PBS and ABA, such that these approaches can be adopted and implemented on a wider scale than 1:1 casework would allow

6. To develop clinical models of behaviour support tailored to Norwood's services and people we support, including developing our offer to people with complex Autism

7. To manage the input of clinical associates in complex cases and ensure that recommendations are incorporated into behaviour support plans and implemented to achieve clinical outcomes

8. To regularly report to a Behaviour Panel on the performance of work in this area, including caseload, use of restrictive measures, change being evidenced and complex case management

9. To support and supervise staff in accordance with regulatory requirements, operating at all times within performance management and disciplinary policies and procedures.

10. With support and in line with policy and procedure, manage budgets and resources to provide excellent value for money and a strong focus on efficiency.


11. To maintain standard of dress that is appropriate to role and in accordance with the organisation's dress policy.

12. To maintain confidentiality at all times and to ensure respect for, proper observance of and adherence to Norwood's confidentiality policy for all staff.

13. To attend regular supervision sessions with line manager, regular team meetings and undertake relevant training as and when required.

14. To take all reasonable care of the health and safety of her/himself and of other persons who may be affected by her/his acts or omissions. As regards to any duty or requirement imposed upon the organisation by or under any of the relevant statutory provisions, to co-operate with the organisation as far as it necessary to enable that duty or requirement to be performed or complied with.

15. To report to the Health and Safety Manager either serious risks or your concerns over safety issues.

16. To work collaboratively with volunteers to ensure that their contribution enhances quality of service provision and support across the organisation.

17. To work at any other Norwood location, as and when required.

18. To undertake any other duties which are consistent with the post.

Who Norwood Supports



Experience of directing behaviour analytic service provision in line with Behaviour Analyst Certification Board.

A track record of success in utilising PBS to support behaviour that challenges in people with learning difficulties and/or Autism.

Experience of providing clinical supervision, and working alongside clinical associates.

Experience of delivering training to a wide group of colleagues.

Experience of setting up a service and developing models of behaviour support.


Experience of writing service specifications.

Experience of developing operational strategy.

Experience of implementing both ABA and PBS methodologies, including the ability to advise colleagues on utilising both.

Experience of managing the input of clinical associates to meet more complex needs.




Relevant first degree (eg Psychology).

MSc in ABA.

Board Certified Behaviour Analyst.


Knowledge & Skills


The skill to manage a complex caseload and balance this with other duties.

Detailed knowledge of theoretical and technological ABA and PBS approaches, and the ability to put these into practice.

Skilled in a range of assessment methodologies, ranging from initial assessment following referral to more detailed assessments to support with complex behaviour that challenges.

Ability to communicate clearly, assertively, and diplomatically at all levels in group and one to one settings.

Highly effective verbal reasoning skills.

Willingness and ability to develop organisational guidelines and corporate objectives.

Effective presentation and interpersonal skills.


Knowledge of quality assurance in ABA and PBS work.

Skilled in producing training programmes that enable non-practitioners to embed methodologies in their support (including both colleagues and parents).




Mobile - able to travel to other sites.

Car owner and user.

Self starter.

High attention to detail and accuracy.
